Nanaimo compared with other British Columbia cities

Compare two cities

Nanaimo's total residential rate of 0.7312% is above the 0.4794% average of the 28 British Columbia municipalities we cover. A lower rate does not always mean a lower bill: tax = assessed value × rate, so cities with high home values often have lower rates.

  • Home Owner Grant

Reduces property tax on a principal residence. The 2026 grant threshold is $2,075,000; the grant is reduced by $5 for each $1,000 of assessed value over the threshold. Nanaimo tax notices show amounts payable with no grant, the regular grant and the additional grant (e.g. owners 65 or older). An unclaimed grant amount is subject to the City's late-payment penalty. Run by Province of British Columbia (claimed with the Province each year).

Low-interest loan that pays annual property taxes on a principal residence for owners meeting provincial criteria. For taxes deferred for 2026 and later years, compound interest is charged. Nanaimo notices show a deferral credit for owners enrolled in automatic renewal; an application received by the Province after the due date may lead to late-payment penalties. Run by Province of British Columbia.

  • Pre-Authorized Withdrawals (PAWS)

Optional plan that prepays property taxes by automatic monthly withdrawals on the 15th; interest earned on prepayments is credited on the tax notice. Changes for the May 15 and June 15 prepayments must be received by April 30. Run by City of Nanaimo.

  • Home owner grant
