About Canadian Property Tax

Updated October 28, 2026

Canadian Property Tax aims to be the most accurate source on property tax in Canada: what each city charges, where the money goes, what buyers pay at closing, and which programs can lower the bill.

What we publish

Residential property tax rates for 153 municipalities in all provinces and territories, split into their components with five years of history; a calculator and a compare tool; land transfer tax rules and calculators for every province, with Toronto's and Quebec municipalities' add-ons, first-time buyer rebates and non-resident taxes; 8 vacancy and speculation taxes; 21 provincial and territorial relief programs plus municipal programs; and how assessment and appeals work in each province.

Why

Property tax information in Canada is spread across hundreds of municipal PDFs, provincial datasets and assessment websites, each with its own format and calendar. Third-party summaries often omit components, mix tax years or skip their sources. We bring the official figures together in one consistent format, show where each dollar goes, and link every number to its source.

How it is made

Every figure is extracted from an official source, archived and checked a second time before publication; see the methodology and editorial policy, which also explain how AI tools are used.
