Mill rates (dollars per $1,000 of assessed value) for the 'Single Family & Vacant Residential' class, City of Medicine Hat Bylaw 4878-2026, Schedule A. Rates and total as published in mills on the City's Current Tax Rates table (Bylaw 4878-2026 Schedule A states the same rates per $1: 0.0067438, 0.0026937, 0.0001130). Bylaw passed third reading April 20, 2026. Multi-family residential property pays a higher municipal rate. Education: the ASFF residential rate and the Medicine Hat Catholic Separate Regional Division #20 (opted-out) residential rate are identical. The Cypress View Foundation (seniors' housing) requisition applies to all classes except machinery & equipment. The Designated Industrial Property requisition is not on residential bills. Schedule A tax levies are 'adjusted for previous years over and under levies' (MGA s.359(3)), so levy / assessment does not exactly reproduce the education and foundation rates.

Rates as published for the residential class. Bills can also include fixed charges, local improvement levies and utility fees that are not based on assessed value.

Compare two cities

Medicine Hat's total residential rate of 0.9550% is above the 0.8569% average of the 14 Alberta municipalities we cover. A lower rate does not always mean a lower bill: tax = assessed value × rate, so cities with high home values often have lower rates.

Your assessment in Medicine Hat

How assessment works in Alberta

Assessed by: City of Medicine Hat Assessment Department (municipal assessors under Alberta legislation). Valuation date used for 2026 taxes: July 1, 2025.

2026 assessment notices were mailed February 27, 2026. Talk to an assessor first (403-529-8114, [email protected]). Then file the Assessment Review Board Complaint Form with the registration fee to the Clerk of the Assessment Review Board (580 1 Street SE, Medicine Hat AB T1A 8E6; [email protected]) by the date on the assessment notice: for the 2026 tax year, 4:30 p.m. on May 6, 2026. Valuation date: July 1 of the assessment year (the year before the tax year) under MRAT s.6, so 2026 taxes use July 1, 2025 values; physical condition as of December 31, 2025 (MGA s.289(2)).
